Learning piano at an early age started my journey which ultimately led to a career in service support of the pianoforte; the musical instrument which has probably inspired more composers and musicians than any other in history.
Although there is satisfaction in adjusting a fine concert instrument, there is also satisfaction in taking care of that first piano for a beginner. Ensuring the instrument is tuned to standard pitch A440 is very important for development of listening and aural skills. Learning a new language is much easier for young children, and similarly learning musical skills related to ear development is ideally accomplished by starting music lessons when young and learning on a piano with an acceptable action and correctly adjusted tuning. Many older instruments still have this potential. But sadly, some are extremely worn or require major service to bring to an acceptable standard making it discouraging and frustrating for someone beginning lessons.
Having had a long career working on many pianos over the years, a highlight which actually started at the beginning of my career was taking care of the regular service on a piano used by a beginner piano student. But my service work was only one of the factors that helped that student become a music professional. The efforts, encouragement and support of family and music teachers; along with many hours of practicing, study and hard work done by the student were all important factors. I count myself privileged in being able to have provided piano service for at least three one time beginners who ultimately chose primary or secondary careers as music professionals … such as becoming concert pianists, recording artists, and music educators.
An invitation to piano teachers: I’ve found that many young students and even older ones are fascinated by the operation and adjustments possible on a real piano such as technical demonstrations of pitch, tone and touch. If you live in the KW area and are interested in having a talk and demonstration for your students perhaps during a recital, etc. feel free to contact me, as it might be possible to arrange this.
